Kell, others in running for Frick Award

Former Tigers third baseman George Kell is already in the Hall of Fame as a player. Starting Sept. 1, Tigers fans will have another chance to try to help him garner some recognition as a broadcaster.

Miguel Cabrera single-handedly beat the Royals. Cabrera homered and drove in all four runs in the Detroit Tigers' 4-2 win over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday. Cabrera broke a 2-2 tie with a bases-loaded double in the eighth to help the Tigers take two-of-three games from the Royals. He also hit a two-run homer in the sixth to tie the game.


Leyland tossed in eighth inning

Tigers manager Jim Leyland was ejected from Sunday's series finale against the Kansas City Royals for arguing a play at third base in the eighth inning.

Leyland looks for improvement in 2009

The Tigers own a 24-35 record against the American League Central this season, a mark that fell far below expectations, and one that manager Jim Leyland said will improve in 2009.

Billy Butler supplied the pop Kansas City was sorely missing, and the rest of the Royals woke up, too. Butler drove in four runs in his first career multi-homer game and the Kansas City Royals had 17 hits in a 13-3 rout of the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night. Butler hit a solo homer in the second and added a three-run shot off starter Kenny Rogers during the Royals' four-run sixth.


Replay not used in close Polanco call

Replay history was nearly made in the ninth inning of Saturday night's Tigers-Royals game at Comerica Park after Placido Polanco hit a high fly ball down the left-field line that would have been a home run, if fair. It was ruled foul, and replay was not used.
