Jones waits for chances to save Tigers

A year ago at this point, Todd Jones had eight saves in 10 opportunities, pitched in 13 appearances and was one of the busiest members of a Tigers team that got off to a hot start. As the Tigers came into the Bronx to open a three-game series Tuesday, Jones has just four saves in as many chances with 10 appearances.

Red Wings go up 3-0 on Avs (AP)

Colorado Avalanche goalie Jose Theodore looks back to see the puck go into the goal off the stick of Detroit Red Wings left winger Henrik Zetterberg in the second period of Game 3 of an NHL Western Conference semifinal hockey playoff series in Denver on Tuesday, April 29, 2008. The Red Wings won 4-3.

The usually tight and testy Colorado-Detroit matchup has never been this one-sided, on the scoreboard or in the trainer’s room. Pavel Datsyuk scored twice and Johan Franzen picked up his sixth goal of the series, putting the Red Wings on the cusp of the Western Conference finals with a 4-3 victory Tuesday night over the ailing Avalanche, who lost another star skater when leading scorer Paul…

Sheffield looks to repeat swing in Bronx

Gary Sheffield went 1-for-4 on Tuesday with two strikeouts and a walk, so it was far from a breakout game. But with one swing that looked a little like the Sheffield of old, it was a sign of what he can do -- and he'll once again take his hacks against his former team when the Tigers take on the Yankees on Wednesday.

Rogers pitches Tigers past Yankees

Kenny Rogers had several chances to fall against the Yankees on Tuesday night, but by lasting six innings with two runs surrendered, he allowed Detroit's early lead to stick for a 6-4 victory.

New York Yankees' Morgan Ensberg, left, greets teammate Hideki Matsui who scored on Jason Giambi's ninth inning single in the Yankees 6-4 loss to the Detroit Tigers in their baseball game at Yankee Stadium in New York, Tuesday, April 29, 2008.

Alex Rodriguez is headed to the disabled list, joining Jorge Posada. The New York Yankees finally returned home Tuesday night and received nothing but more bad news. Gary Sheffield and Curtis Granderson homered in the third inning, sending old pro Kenny Rogers and the Detroit Tigers to a 6-4 victory over the road-weary Yankees.

Pistons’ Billups, Hamilton, Wallace nearly beat 76ers alone (AP)

Philadelphia 76ers forward Reggie Evans complains to an official that he was fouled on a shot in the second half of Game 5 of an NBA first-round playoff basketball series Tuesday, April 29, 2008, in Auburn Hills, Mich. Evans scored just three points in the 76ers 98-81 loss.

The Detroit Pistons might have won Game 5 more than an hour before it started. Music wasn’t rattling the locker room. Eyes were locked on the big-screen TV showing the previous matchup with the Philadelphia 76ers. Chauncey Billups scored 21 points, Richard Hamilton had 20 and Rasheed Wallace added 19 to lift Detroit to a 98-81 victory over Philadelphia on Tuesday night and a 3-2 lead in the…
